When he goes dark, it doesn't necessarily mean he's being evil. But how do you explain that to a "lawful good" paladin (like some knights in this manga)?
In role-playing circles (for me, old-school 2nd edition D&D), we could have other knights, who were "good", but without the extreme strictures of lawful good paladins. Say, Chaotic good, where the end results are more important, and if you were forced to follow the letter of the law, leading you to miss the end target, that would be worse than making some accommodations in order to actually get to the end goal.
One could compare this to the manga trope where the Otherworlder Japanese won't kill super guilty evil people, leading to bad outcomes later on.
