Those villains don't actually need to keep the MC alive. It's not like Lacra, Illias and others would know he's already dead, should they kill him right now. I'm not overly impressed by the knights, anyway, as they are easily fooled. They could do absolutely nothing about the bandits before the MC appeared. That's the knights' level of competence.
