As I understand, the parents are divorced. They still love each other, but both are workaholic, also the father worries about his short lifespan, thus they divorced to give each time and space. And, that is a very good decision that many other couples can't make it until the relationship is completely ruined.

Recent chapters felt more like Nobu now. Previously I kept thinking that it doesnt hit me like Nobu was but previous few chapters where they start connecting more felt good.

Why did they divorce at all?
Marriage is complicated. Some couples just don't work as a married couples but can stay as friends. And from what we know, these two have a rash personality. They eloped when they were young after all.

Different fox, and it was one of his ancestors that got cursed so every male member of the bloodline died when they hit 60.

The shorty is a Divine Fox, and was trying to save him and family but the curse was too strong to remove. The family probably got cursed by a Nine-Tails, meaning only the direct intervention by a god could save them.
From what I read, there isn't any other fox. And our divine fox is a god, even if a minor one. Japan has millions of gods with different levels of power. There are gods that bring calamities, too.
And it seems like there isn't any curse. Some families just have genetics that make them died younger i.e a disease that passed through male chromosome. With wars, poor nutrition and lack of medical knowledge in the past, it isn't strange for the men in his family to die young. I heard stories about families like that in my country.

The Divine Foxes are servants to the Eastern god Uka-no-Mitama-no-Kami, just like Angels/Valkyrie/etc. are to the Western god(s). They have some divine power but are not considered gods themselves, minor or otherwise.

Unless the official English version says it differently, the fox straight up apologized for them being unable to remove the curse.

Also you're saying that divine powers are so much weaker than modern medicine that the Divine Foxes weren't able to fix a medical condition with a blessing or something? Like they couldn't save the original victim but they could bless all of the future generations to not get whatever non-curse ailment you think it was?

I think I actually like this spin-off more than the main story. It feels much more calm and contemplative. There's a lot more focus on facial expressions and other non-verbal communication rather than lots of dialogue. It works especially well with the chapters that focus on Sohei and the older customers.

Okay, I think they're just separated than outright divorced.

Oh wow what her mom said is exactly what my mom said. I always ask her why she still working even though me and my siblings already work now. I think I starting to get it now.

Assuming the translation on ch. 11 is correct, there is a curse that shortens the lifespan of Sohei’s male family members, but it was never discussed as to where the curse originates from. The foxes gave them a blessing/protection that mitigates that effect, which allows a lifespan to around 60. Sohei and his (recent) predecessors mistaken this protection as a curse.

I went back to chapter 11 and you are right. I misremembered and thought Sohei completely got it wrong and that there was never any curse.

My bad.

Okay, I want to get to the bottom of this. Are they still married or not?

From the way the manga frames, it just shows the wife who works abroad a lot and has less involvement in the restaurant business. Even this chapter mention, wanting to go on more dates with her husband.

Why do they keep describing her, as former wife?
I tried to look it up and according to Japanese comments, the mom and dad are legally divorced. They're just still very friendly with each other.

No worries, glad to be of use. I had to check myself before writing my comment cause I thought I was misremembering myself.

Yeah, what I thought the fox was saying was "Sorry for making you think it was a curse". But since the text didn't say that, I guess I was wrong.

Makes me wonder how they got divorced in the first place. I know there are divorced couple that is still cordial but not on this level.
