I know that isekai series are usually shit on for going full “superior Nippon cuisine” and everything, but are you really trying to tell me that this world hasn’t done fried potatoes yet? Fried potatoes, the meal that only requires like three ingredients at most? THAT fried potatoes?

Also for a topical news, the next volume of the manga will not have a cover will not have volume extras or even cover art, because the artist was not paid by the publisher.
It's not like they have corn to make vegetable oil, and they mentioned in the chapter that it was hard for commoners to get meat, so they couldn't even use fat or lard to fry them. Hell, salt is also an expensive ingredient during that era that the other world is currently in.

That's a fucking dick move by Kadokawa, it's not like they're hurting for money.

What the hell is cylon (as in cylon oil)?

Also, for best results, if you want to make fried potatoes from scratch, be it fries, wedges or chips, it's best to blanch them first before frying them.

Historically, we’ve been using buttons for 5,000 years, but they were only used as ornaments, and only in the 13th century did people find out that putting a button into a buttonhole could fasten two pieces of fabric together.

It do be like that.

I think this chapter references the story of Antoine-Augustin Parmentier. Potatoes are originally from the Americas and when they came to Europe, farmers thought they were weird, people didn't know how to cook them, and some mistakenly believed potatoes caused leprosy, so they were mostly grown for animal feed. Parmentier tried to change the perception of potatoes in France (he had been imprisoned and fed potatoes in Prussia, where they were more progressive about potatoes). He promoted potato recipes, held fancy dinners with potatoes, and there's an anecdote about him tricking farmers into stealing potatoes and growing them. The same story comes up in the manga Nobunaga's Chef.

Not quite the same thing because potatoes seem to be native to this land, but potatoes had already been in France for a while by Parmentier's time. It just takes time for culinary developments to occur.

I would think 'commoners' would probably be more likely to cook 'whole' potatoes in stews and such if not baked/stuffed potatoes but you could always 'bake' potato wedges without necessarily too much oil (might be better for you anyways) versus getting some kinda crisp chip/fry

That said while i don't expect the izakaya to be a 'charity' but considering they have nobles and such visit them, they could always suggest stuff even if they don't provide some bulk raw ingredients or so , if not one of the workers visiting the villages and such

They'd better invent insulin fast after this 😅
I mean, alcohol exists in this world lol, unless there's also some detox medicine (i don't remember if 'magic' is canon here but probably not other than the portal that links their world to japan lol)

They probably have fried potato dishes, but nothing like...concrete? I guess is the word? Like people have likely fried taters, but it didn't become part of the cuisine. It wasn't A Dish until they codified it into these Addictive Potatoes.

Never tried wedged fried potatoes with skin on... Is it any different in taste compare to stick shape fried potatoes?...
Let's just say I think fried potato skin taste better than fried potato in Mcdonald.
I kinda think I could eat more potato skin than french fries before getting sick of it.
