There's different variations of shiokara. There's the traditional one with squid because it's easiest to gain access to. There's another variation with mackeral guts. That one I heard was especially smelly and harder to make due to the guts being the first thing that gets discarded when preparing the fish for market on a large scale.I was expecting cheese on potato... not hot shiokara! I eat a lot of crazy Japanese and other Asian stuff (tarantulas, balut) including shiokara - but can't imagine it hot, and have never seen it hot at an izakaya. Like he said, the smell must be quite nasty and strong.
