God written as "God" is often used to refer to the creation god/deity or the only one god in Christian belief.
But even in Europe, there are many cultures with multiple god level beings. Thor, Odin or such from Nordic belief, Zeus, Hera from Greek mythology, the Tuatha Dé Danann from Celtic cultures... they are all multiple gods/god level beings.
It is possible that this world here is under such multiple gods belief too so them using "God" would be quite assumptous. Well, I haven't seen such things as their belief being shown extensively, so I wouldn't really know. But still, it's not good to just assume.
Eva already imagined "God's messengers" as angels, that's hardly making assumptions. Especially since the world they're in is a late medieval equivalent to Germany.
The point was to differentiate Shinto beliefs with the beliefs of this other world, since the chapter starts by playing off the confusion around "kami". Since in Shintoism, "kami" are essentially spirits but can be deities, but "kami" is translated as "God" to Eva.
Shinbou: "It's a shrine for god's messengers." denoting Shinto views of gods/spirits/deities
Eva: "God's Messengers?" Eva's monotheistic or Abrahamic religious beliefs. Let's capitalize Messengers too cause that's literally what angels are.
That way the misunderstanding is highlighted in the confusion as well.
I agree that we should use "Messenger" or "Messengers" with a capital "M". For this is a title.
But the part I'm saying is assumptious is that this place is by no mean Germany in our Earth despite it is by names, by cultures and by geoghraphic positions an equivalent to Germany.
Though, the church can be seen as one related to Christianity, we still don't know if it was Christianity or a faith with multiple deities. Thus, I'm saying we should keep neutral for the time being until we know the exacts.
That said, that is when we nitpick the usage of "God" and "god".
"God" even in Shinto belief seems like aanother kind of title (to my knowledge) so it shouldn't even mean anything much.
Holy fuck, the point is to use language to denote "god" from a polytheistic belief from a monotheistic one.
It's not about bringing Christianity into a fantasy setting, it's to fucking highlight the cultural differences leading up to the misunderstanding.

Except it doesn't work with "deity" and "kami" is translated as "god" anyway, so we're stuck with "god" and "God" instead.

Except that doesn't quite work cause that's a hell of a leap from one to the other.
"kami" denotes deities/spirits/gods. It's only a title when used in a name ie Inari Okami -> Inari no Kami.
The whole point of the joke is that "kami" is translated as "god"
So Eva, in a fantasy equivalent to Germany, that likely has a monotheistic religion that doesn't have to be related to our real world Christianity so stop getting hung up on that, hears it and thinks "God".

My original intention was to say "there's nothing to indicate the belief here uses the term 'God' and it would not matter anyway".
