That's a complete misconception. The idea that Madoka darkened the genre is because it made westerners zoom in on darker works. Darker mahou shoujo stuff in reality only increased slightly and the vast majority of the genre stayed as is.

What is up with Yuusha lately being translated as Brave instead of Hero? That is lame as hell.

It's not a "lately" thing, I remember Tecmo's Deception from 1996 having yuusha translated as Brave, it's a literal translation.

Not really. There was never a huge amount of magical girl stuff. There's been a dozen Shonen series for every magical girl show since Sailor Moon.

There's always been a core of the standard stuff, mostly thanks to Precure, but after Madoka, the genre's output definitely shifted because of poor copycats, and also the expansion of the acceptable audience demographics to include teenage and adult males. Nanoha, Symphogear, Spec-ops Asuka, Magical Girl Raising Project, Yuki Yuna Is A Hero, at least three others that I'm currently forgetting the names of, all decidedly darker than the genre's core, a couple of them being straight up death games, others focusing on magical girls having PTSD, suffering permanent injury and disability, Symphogear being Symphogear.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love some of these - Nanoha, Symphogear, Yuki Yuna, others are exceptional but I can't watch them (Spec-Ops Asuka)...but Precure and Jewelpet Annnd....I guess Doremi? I forget when those aired, were the only real "traditional" Magical Girl holdouts. Oh, and Sailor Moon Crystal, but that's a (more manga accurate) remake, and Card Csptor Sakura Clear Card, which was a single season sequel.

I WISH there had been more thats lasted more than 26 seasons worth of episodes, I love the genre. But there really hasn't.

I think the effect madoka is very comparable to that of watchmen and dark knight returns had on the comic industry in pushing darker stories into the mainstrea.

Absolutely. Evangelion to a more minor extent, too. (There had been the darker mecha shows for decades before NGE, but that began the "deconstruction" era. "Being a mecha pilot sucks, actually" rather than the "war is fucking terrible" messages they typically had.)

Because Hero are now synonimous with superhero, you can blame Boku no Hero academia for this.
