I do not get the pacing of this manga, even though the chapters are split in two, I never really get the feeling that a chapter is over. The story just... flows on, sort of. Well, a great read anyway!

They can't kill him until the magic stone is 100% gone, he's still being protected by its power. The only ones left in the castle at that point would be the Knight Captain and his assassination squad, some slaves, and the king's inbred (grand)/(great-grand)daughter-wives.

Hasn't it become an open secret that his extended life, and the barriers that protect him are tied to the crystal? So I would have assumed any plot against him would have first targeted the crystal core.

No one can damage the crystal, it's impervious to physical/magical attacks as a result of the blood sacrifice ritual that they use to recharge it. Only the MC's purification power has been able to bypass the shield and damage it and the king directly.
