If anything, I'm more inclined to believe that it was less of a "didn't harvest them" problem and more of a "already used them" issue.

If anything, the tusks were safe simply because he immediatly went into making walls and nobody else in the village could do something with them, unlike the hide which most likely went right towards the tanner.
