But the horn didn't explode when they rammed themselves in the trees so it become like this only when they aren't on them ?

Maybe the horns store magic. They usually shed their horns, which can be an indication of the magic in the horn being used up. Because this horn was forcefully ripped out (by accident), it still has magic in it, which is apparently volatile. It didn’t explode when it rammed to the tree because the wolf would still be attached to it, being able to control it (otherwise, it would be a problem if the horns can accidentally explode). I’m literally just making a guess here.

The horns are, in a way, magic tools.

By default they are inert hence why despite him having a warehouse of them there's been no explosions.
But when there's 'intent' to attack the horn become active and release the stored magic.

Which is more or less how the wolves naturally use their horns (normally safe/inert, combat mode = magic go brr)
