Haha..you beat me to it. Some armadillos in the south west US carry the bacteria that causes leprosy. You cant tell which ones have it, so eating them would be roulette of sorts.

He ends up with 2 things:
1. Smaller spear (instead of this big lance) made using dragon scale mixed into metal.
2. Explosive javelin made using the dogs' horn (they're inert normally, but when there's 'intent' to use magic they become active and explode on impact)
(it's strong enough to even break Hakuren's scale)

The angels got a fair bit addicted to throwing those explosive javelins...

They also aren't normal rabbits, though. That's like, the murder rabbit from the holy grail and the black knight.
An angel with a solid metal lance couldn't pierce it...

Before protag showed up, it was common sense that the Forest of Death was a no-go zone inhabited by ridiculously dangerous monsters. Between the demon spiders and inferno wolves, that's still true, but they've been domesticated. It's why Ru was trying to hide there way back at the start. Even the angels are considered "low spec" there.

So they were impenetrable because of the rolling movement? Weird...

The toughness could even be because the armadillos were flexing their muscles inside the sphere, making it more compact, or some magic explanation for it being tough when they were alive and when adding centrifugal force it made impossible to land a clean hit for most fighters and other beasts.
All said and done it makes me a bit sad to see them killed like that, enclosed in their sphere with beasts slowly breaking through, that is how prey catched in a web usually goes down...
