Errr.... Maybe
Oh no. I know people have REALLY weird tastes in bed, but these trivia shows (at least to me) that the Japanese are willing to take them to further and really strange reaches in their AVs. For example, on this same chapter explain the existence of the Full Face Mask. I can understand cosplay AV if you want to cater to 2D fetishists, but THAT?I like to think of it as people naturally have myriad tastes and the Japanese are willing to cater to all of them, out of mutual appreciation and a sense of service (within reason and behind half-closed doors).
While elsewhere, everyone has something 'weird' they like but tend to bring it to the grave with them. I think there's some irony in that the Japanese, in keeping different things private by distinguishing between their public, private and even more true selves (go look up the 3 faces concept), can be more honest with themselves than other cultures when given the privacy to do so.
Would you believe I only know that video exists because of the meme? Never watched it and not very interested in searching. There's defo some weird Japanese smut out there, but the interviews are pretty standard, and not that far off from stuff America makes. I mean, how many of you know what the 'casting couch' is? So many of you can probably recognise that particular black couch in that particular white room.... you perverts!
Actually "public" is a pretty common porn genre worldwide. If not out in the streets and such, it's usually at a house party with people cheering it on.like the public train, guro itself or Full Face Mask...

Yeah, I know about casting couches and I don't consider them too out there, but other times this manga's trivia made me thin WTF is wrong with them, like the public train, guro itself or Full Face Mask...
I always thought exposing yourself to others' fetishes is risking permanent mental scars. But beyond that I considered that, as all businesses, AVs wouldn't make a move without profit, and that requires a respectable consuming audience which shares the fetish featured. That's where I'm rather weirded out.Either people do have such myriad tastes and never talk about it, or they don't and so they obviously also won't talk about something they don't have.
Internet Rule #34 exists, so it's not like fetishes are limited, from the weird to the concerning. Even if you don't know who has which fetish, the fact they most likely exist if not unknown. The thing is, as said before, that some people consider some really obscure and weird fetishes to be widespread enough to make a profit out of them, and it apparently works. But in either case, you won't know about it. Now the thing is, your sense of what constitutes norms is based on collectively what people talk about, and therefore consider normal. Absent that, it's based on your own preferences which, as a singular example, obviously can't be used to prove if people have differing and myriad tastes.
Just by knowing how well-known some concerning fetishes are (infamous example: Netorare), I'm not as optimist. That doesn't mean they're gonna ACT on them, sure, but they make the possible market more flooded than you'd be comfortable with. You see the issue? You can't really prove people don't have these tastes elsewhere too. Now, I can't really prove the opposite either, but with a plausible explanation for the difference I'm inclined to go with glass half full here.
It's a thing, but it mostly depends of certain fetishes and from person to person. My country (Spain) leans a wee bit on the conservative in these matters, but even so we don't cry out certain things. In any case, the other half of being able to have these fetishes and niches is that others aren't judgmental about it, as long as it's kept private and doesn't bother anyone else of course. Your reaction further suggests why this kind of stuff isn't a thing anywhere else.
