where is this even going? what is the plot of this manga?

Not sure if its their release speed or if this is glacially slow plot, but im not sure i see any characters im supposed to care about, or root for. We dont even know who we are supposed to be rooting against. Kinda just another one of those manga where pretty much everyone is unlikeable and im not sure where its going,

You lost me there. Yes, salaries make it easy to assign a value to a person in a Capitalist system... but very similar things end up happening in all economic and social systems. Whether it is the number of medals in a militaristic system, the impact score in academia or your "stats" as a sports player... human beings (especially, younger ones) love to find/create a metric to assign themselves a high value and compare themselves favorably to others.

(Edit: grammar)
Imperialist hegemony has ruled for just over 400 years, or rather just under. And in that time, capitalism has solidified itself as the de facto global standard. In other words, for four centuries, we the people under Empire have been conditioned to think EXACTLY as you have described here. So of course you would say this, and no one can blame you for it. But it isn't true in all places, and it certainly hasn't ALWAYS been true. That is a mindset of thos who did not live in abundance, and were forced to take from others in order to survive themselves. Historically, that is a signifier of those of the caucus mountains, where weather and terrain brought much lack and subsequently lead to a global invasion by its people to find more.

Without boring you to death, even today there are tribes in Africa who live happily off of nearly one food source. Honestly, it's the cold places of the world that seem to born this "be better than your neighbor" ideology.
There's alot more nuance than I care to dive into on a random manga forum - America's destruction of every attempt at non-capitalism worldwide, propaganda, etc - but I assure you that capitalism IS the problem.

Yeah, capitalism has a lot of problems (inequality, poverty, corruption, etc.). But, first, it is way older than the imperialist mindset you mention (which is also far from being the first one, as well). They didn't have banks as we know them today, but most of the ideas about capitalism were already present in Babylonian times.

Second, any other alternatives have also other problems and, ultimately, they also generate their own metrics to value people. Even soviet leaders ended up carrying medals and other insignias (although I would consider surviving the successive purges to be the best metric).

So stop spewing propaganda against just one system you don't like and tell us. What do you propose instead? And how would you avoid other ways of ranking people from destroying it over time?
