These kind of cons prey on the poor and disenfranchised, by giving them a clear enemy. They make up some "plausible" explanation for how someone is causing your misfortune.

The character faces and text doesn't seem to quite line up this chapter... Marida looks so happy when discussing the idea of the town she is in being starved out...

smiling Marida said:
All of the villagers we saw outside seemed practically starved" biiig smile

Makes me wonder if there was a translation mistake, or if the artist wasn't thinking when drawing that face.

I mean, she probably doesn't care about them, hence why she can smile like that. Or she's super confident and just pointing out the obvious...

I know how they prey on theirs victims. Problem is Mountain Clans story break immersion for me too hard. especially when it was reveal, in novel, the extend of the problem.
They are isolated and closed of society who makes living by collecting, organizing and selling information for higher bidder. (Speculating by previous chapter, they don't mind assassinations either.) With main motto of absolute neutrality, he said it himself in this chapter. Now, comes the outsiders, and persuade bunch of clans to converse into new religion. In a process betraying theirs vows of neutrality and turning on the rest of the clans. And no one know what to do next.
I find it hard to believe that group of spies (and probably assassins) was caught up and defeated with theirs pants down. By the corrupt priest non the least, on which they totally able gather information as shown in this chapter. The plot too forced for MC getting himself 'professional' intelligence agency. Though this is devalues them.

😮‍💨 This kind of stories is where everything somehow working despite leaders incompetency anyway.😮‍💨

Just double checked, TL is paraphrased, but correct. She says that she understands and that the villagers they saw outside seemed too thin/skinny/emaciated. I mean, he did try and kill them last chapter so she probably doesn't care that much. I imagine Albert's face would be a little different in that situation.
