Having watched Primitive Technology go through the entire process for nearly every smelting project he does, questions like these do feel a bit silly now. But I suppose where charcoal comes from and how it's made it's not something most people nowadays think much about, less so an Out that's still kinda new to camping.

Or, maybe there's some mistranslation and he's talking charcoal briquettes specifically? (those don't look like briquettes to me though, so I doubt it)

I'm guessing this is still Kyara, and it's more of a The Time Traveller's Wife situation. Whenever he pops in, it's at different points in her life, just not in order. This version of Kyara has already met him multiple times (more than just twice), but those meetings are still in his future.

oh that's what is going on, I was so confused as that was clearly Kyara, but I couldn't figure out how she knew so many other world things, or why she said it was only 3 days. I was thinking she researched otherworlders or something, seeing as it was a known concept. But the knowledge seemed to specific, she her having experienced it with him makes so much more sense.

As someone who once life in rural area of south east asia.

Even if charcoal technically available, many still rely on basic dry wood as fuel.
Easy to procure (just go out in the woods) and relatively easy to store.

Hell, when i was a kid, the local store still sell ash for washing kitchen tools.
