Since his aim is perfect, why did he use the rifle for that close quarters combat? Totally overkill, plus dangerous to those behind the target even through a wood wall or two. Since they don't know what it is, there isn't even the possible benefit of intimidation. Only the demerits of slower reload so chance of getting rushed and being unwieldy. The pistol also would have done fine at getting across the "long range magic" misunderstanding.
