I know I will use a mana stealing spell on the creature with no mana. huh there is a cooldown. I guess I will have to use a spell that actually does something.

I think it caused a mana detonation (hence why its HP was also extremely reduced). If it just stole mana, its HP would have been unaffected.

But I agree with your main point. Why use a spell that targets the creatures mana when its already out of mana...
