Pretty sure abusing and (as far as they know) killing the rightful heir of a higher ranking noble house isn't going to go well for the lower ranking dad or his commoner mistress and child.

My guess is that he regrets that he ignored the birth mother, and felt he hadn't the right to get involved with her life now, however he did care enough that he wanted her to have a good life a good life to make up for his own actions against the mother.

As @DanYHKim and @v.roderick point out, it's not so much that the sperm donor was lamenting the loss of his wife and daughter, but the blood connections that tied him to the titles and position he enjoyed.

So this isn't a case of a too embarrassed absentee perent, this is a selfimportant gold digger realizing his cash cow had died, along with any further chance of living his ideal life.

I know and you're wrong again, regardless if it's for money, status or power. That is another assumption of motive. From what I read ahead,

he wasn't intending to marry into that family rather it was foisted onto him, by MC's Grandpa. He wasn't even remotely interested in any status or privileges. In fact he doesn't actually do all that much with the wealth, status and power, just a guy who went around swinging a big sword and just moved on. The only ones who blew through the wealth, flaunt the status and power were the step-families and the staff who stole things when he wasn't paying attention. Which now that I think about it, makes my opinion of him even worst, because he chooses to ignore all that going on. Much like how he ignored problems in his domain in the first few chapters.

Regardless, still a shit dad. And I could care less about him.
