Your grandfather is a big wig in the boy scouts...so he threw you outside and expected you to take care of yourself? Isn't the boy scouts all about teamwork?

Every scout needs to have the basic skillset, and then the more advanced skills if you continue in the trade. The problem with overreliance on teamwork is that it tends to make some people more passive. So, while such people could still do something in the group, they actually can't necessarily do it on their own or if they suddenly had to lead people knowing less than they do. At least back in my youth, in the scouts, we had to clear a long list of tasks requiring some skill and knowledge. Many of those skills were tested individually. Scout organisations also arrange regularly competitions where members test their mettle against others, for those interested in such contests.

There's a difference between being taught how to take care of yourself and doing that kind of stuff under supervision and straight up thrown into the woods to survive off the land by yourself.

Uhhuh. I was just saying it's not all about teamwork. You need to be able to do a lot on your own as well. Leaving a kid alone in the forest to survive the best he can is an extreme (or extremist) case, which has got nothing to do with Scouts. But if you do have the Scouts skills, you are more likely to survive such an ordeal.
