Are they still going to separate from him? They have grown very close to him, he almost died and could honestly use a lot more guidance from them.
Them wandering off into the sunset on a quazi-endless quest (it seems implied they have few or no leads on this childhood friend) seems kinda contrived so the author can introduce the next heroine.
