Honestly, wouldn't be surprised. He's a wet noodle who can't see a good long-term ally when he sees one. Especially considering he has no long-term goal, so why not accompany them? Are they still going to separate from him? They have grown very close to him, he almost died and could honestly use a lot more guidance from them.
Them wandering off into the sunset on a quazi-endless quest (it seems implied they have few or no leads on this childhood friend) seems kinda contrived so the author can introduce the next heroine.
I much prefer the manga though. The addition of a spirit is a welcoming one.I hear that the spirit is completely absent in the LN. So having the spirit have such a prominent role in the manga means they are veering way off course here.

He's also snu-snued by his fiancee, so it's fine.snusnu-ed to death by old man rip sora
I mean, it's a manga. Do you really expect a hyper realistic character? The contract will probably turn the spirit into an anime girl lol
Well he was suddenly transported in the world so he has no immediate goals. He wants to try and get stronger to go out into the world. The girls on the other hand while they may not have much of a lead still want to try and find their friend, whether he’s alive or not it’d give them closure. And I think they may still be dealing with the aftermath of the war. Forgot what tho but from what I remember something related to the war…maybeAre they still going to separate from him?
