@ZeroVertigo To be fair the basic spells could be quite mundane, or have some back lash to the user. Not everything has to be as dangerous as going to the past or future. And perhaps time is like a river and the magicians are only creating small swells or whirlpools. Altering the flow but not stopping it or changing the direction of the whole river.
some example magic related to time I came up with. (maybe irrelevant but i got caught up and made them anyway XP)
Preservation: slowing down time to mitigate some aging/rotting of organics.
decay: speeding up time to accelerate the rot or fermenting of organics.
grow: accelerate plant growth.
quick thought: gain some time to think as an instant becomes a moment.
time entangled sight: alter your ability to perceive movement of objects no matter how fast or slow.
