Head maid needs to be an experienced maid, knowing what each maid should be doing to effectively arrange their tasks and schedules. In addition to some other rather ordinary organisation skills and knowing something about the customs and manners among the nobles. Certainly above one of the rank and file maids, yes, but still not what this chapter made Margaret sound like.

If Margaret is the daughter of the duke's first aide, I reckon he really did all he could to make her as schooled and skilled as possible. That would certainly make Margaret perfect for the aide position, as she could always consult her old man whenever necessary, not needing to dread the walls of hierarchy like total strangers might in their positions or be so afraid of embarrassing herself since it's her own old man.

They didn't make a list for A maid, they made a list for THE maid, her personal side-by-side maid. Unlike a regular maid, a personal maid will be the closest servant to their master, which means someone who has the authority to move the maids around taking care of the menial tasks. A personal maid isn't in charge of changing bedsheets or sweeping the floor, they're in charge of their master's schedule and personal activities and as such, is both a perfect observation tool and a personal assistant. If anyone were to go for her life, her personal maid would be the most likely to pull it off. It is an incredibly important position.

I mean, she IS going to meet her father's aide's daughter, who is also nobility, so picking something plain might just backfire worse(considering all her latest scandals feature her in drop dead gorgeous dresses). Not to mention she'd already given her seamstress feedback and toned down the design to fit her figure and style, so it definitely wouldn't be the typical gaudy aristocratic overdesigned dresses. I'd wager that her dress would make Margaret thinks that Debora has a good eye for fashion.

Maid was a low-level job of a class society. In English, the word "maid" even conveniently shares the root with "maiden", which means a young virgin woman. Because that's what maids were: they were largely uneducated girls/young women who worked in the simple, low-paying household job until they got married. This is why an educated woman wouldn't even want to be called a maid. Argentaria mentioned lady in waiting, who were aides/companions for royal women typically, but I suppose a ducal family works as well. In fact in fiction with these beyond fancy noble courts, it would work at any level. These ladies in waiting were educated daughters from more important families. Definitely not maids. They did look after their charge, but not in a maid role. It was a desirable position, no doubt.

I don't really know who a head maid was, but perhaps something like a butler's wife would have worked? Or a spinster maid who never got married for whatever reason. Or someone married who couldn't have children and wasn't thus busy? Who knows.

A personal maid should just be a maid who's not serving anyone else, I'd assume.
