Manga artists are obviously inspired by pulp fantasy aesthetic, like Frank Frazetta's art, and other products of pop culture more than anything historical. It's supposed to look heroic, flamboyant, cool and sexy. It has about as much to do with genuine medieval European armor designs as Dungeons & Dragons.
