I think the authorities were more concerned about an increased risk of getting STDs, particularly HIV/AIDS and gonnorhea. They’re not 100% sure if boiling reduces the efficacy of the products, but chances are that boiling rubber isn’t the best idea.

Scientifically it's impossible to reuse that way. Unless the rubber itself can be melted and molded to shape. It may be true for metal, but no for rubber.

The thing about the brushes was quite simple and cute: having two brushes and/or two cups side by side in the bathroom is a symbol of a married couple (or at least one that's living together).

So when they both saw their brushes together, they simply had the reaction of "ah, we are married now".

Kinda like being a newlywed bride and now having to answer to a different last name.
