Classic Ito. Stick around Japanese/Japanese-adjacent horror for long enough and you'll see this one referenced a ton (less than Uzumaki or Enigma of Amigara Fault, but still). Fwiw, the base premise of "thing causes people to grow holes in them" is great and creepy, and it's only brought down slightly by all the surrounding stuff (cursed statuette okay, but why is there a doctor...?). Parable about human greed and disturbing ancient sites, instantly familiar to anyone who grew up with the western canon.
