Kuro letting the past out into the present for a moment there. (not sure if he was once a human who died and then somehow became a reaper--the garb of those two bodies on the ground on p.28 are seemingly from a couple centuries back, if considered contemporary fashion, so.)

I guess we're gonna get Hotaru's true backstory, now. Her being unable to say goodbye to Ren makes perfect sense--she's only been dead/a ghost for a short period of time, and who she was as a living person, she'd put her own feelings last even now. Whatever the case about Ren & Shiori forgetting these conversations once the regret is resolved, speaking her truth would be terrifying for Hotaru, and I don't fault her this hesitation even when it risks her soul (which...she doesn't care about anyway, it would seem).

I'm glad Kuro's being shown to be a lot more "human" than he first appeared. I figured it was a front, perhaps to protect himself--maybe he was a lot more compassionate at the start, but was worn down by so many dead souls acting in ways that would strip him of his own remnants of humanity.
Hopefully he can hold fast to this resurfaced feeling, and get Hotaru through what I suspect will be a very painful remainder of the story--though, with any luck, at least one that sees a peaceful, if not happy, ending for our tragic heroine.
