My comment to you was never an argument but a more detailed version of my original intent with a few extras addressing your points. And yes I was originally comparing it to modern churches as it felt like the protagnist and his gang was looking at it through modern optics rather than medieval age, which threw me off. But I guess it makes sense if only medieval period is considered.
And yes Coca Cola original recipe did contain cocaine but also wine instead of sugar syrup. The prohibition era in the US was what brought about the present-day coke, as they banned wine but not cocaine in the drink.
Never meant it as a counter as my views are similar to yours but more of an explaination, and money was/is/will be always king.
