So quick question. If the point is that they have to suffer in order to atone for their sins, why not just let yourself starve? You're immortal so there's no harm other than the pain and you'll be healed from any serious injury it would incur by the next day, so why not? Is starvation not considered a valid form of suffering?

If they are fully healed the next day, maybe the most they can do is the level of pain after one day without food, never the starvation level. So, it seems possible to atone this way, but it'd take forever, I guess.
