The jokes didn't pass through for the translation and lack of text explaining it.
And the bad grammar simply ruined some, like the turtle-neck thing, I presume the mother mispronounced it in the original text, but didn't in the TL.

Tokkuri is described by the Denshi Jisho dictionary as 1. sake bottle; tall and slender bottle with a narrow mouth made from ceramic, metal or glass that can be used for sake, shoyu or rice vinegar

It is also used to refer to the Turtleneck sweater, probably given the shape being similar. Must be a generational gap thing.
