This is based off of the first patient treated with penicillin. He had a miraculous recovery after only a few doses, but those doses were the last of the penicillin the world had at the time. Dr. Fleming attempted to extract what little penicillin he could from the patient's urine, but it was nowhere near enough to save the infected man. He eventually died from his infection, despite the doctor being able to extract another dose after Earth's last doses were used up.
