Unimportant rant, but bro, i get so fucking PISSED when authors use the "no cell signal / GPS" trope. To clarify, GPS is a one way radio communication system, where your phone/device pinpoint its location using data / time signals embedded in the radio wave. The location you pinpoint from GPS may be useless if you cannot get a connection in any way to emergency services in the first place(no cell tower coverage of any provider etc). Law(in most places) mandates any device capable of reaching a network must be allowed to place emergency calls.

What you may be referring may be Satellite SOS, which allows text based messages in emergency situations on consumer smartphones to go through which is a pretty recent thing. if I remember correctly, Apple did it first with their Iphone? Nevertheless, although "200 meters off the beaten track" and losing all sig is a little funny , It's not THAT too far fetched I think.
