People actually out here acting like this isn't set in the 19th century. Paedophilia wasn't really considered something relevant back then. If a woman had her first period, she was capable of giving birth. It's a sad truth about our history, but that was it. At 14 Lucy would have been considered a matured enough woman for men to marry in most of the western world. It wasn't really until the Convention of the Rights of the Child in 1989 that we got a proper legal definition of what constitutes a child and why they should be protected. Also, a lot of places still hold the age of consent at 14, some regions of Japan in fact have it set that low.
