what you seem to forget is that Johnny is a very selfish character, arguably the most selfish JoJo. He was ready to let the entire world burn just for a chance to reunite with Gyro. He also never really chased the corpse parts to stop Valentine in the beginning, but to cure his lame feet. His goal only changed throughout the course of the Steel Ball Run. Johnny going out of his way to steel the corpse again is fitting his character very well, especially cuz he's not doing it for himself, but for a loved one.
