It kinda was a betrayal though. Even if her reaction of hating him forever is a little extreme, he still lied to her for years stringing her along with a cat as the goal for her hard work only to reveal he never intended to let her have a cat. Just an all around shitty parenting strategy

I can't say for sure if it's abuse, but it sure as hell feels like it. Constant lying is a red flag for shite like this. No matter how inconsequential it may seem.
