not quite sure what kind of bug the big one is, but the other one is definitely a parasitic worm, probably based off the one that mind-controls grasshoppers. If we're discounting bugs we've already seen, big man can't be a roach, pillbug, or rhinoceros beetle, which would have been my first choices. definitely some kind of beetle, though.

I love the character development in Mugai. Though in this situation Yukimura's predictions are questionable, because Mugai can't cover both sides anyway, so him going to either east or west doesn't change that much, since the other side is free to advance. Not to mention that since Yukimura isn't held back by Mugai anymore, now he can join the northern battlefield, and there isn't anybody there who can stop him, so in a long term Mugai going somewhere else simply means that instead of a pincer from west and east there will be a pincer from east and north after Yukimura beats everyone.
Of course, there will be some reinforcements incoming soon, the paper boy is nowhere to be seen so far, the guys from the training in the mountains, maybe Mushikari will come to help, but neither Yukimura nor Mugai should be aware of that when making decisions in this chapter.

For Mugai it makes perfect sense to go west. If you look at the map in chapter 181, Kazusa province (where Jinbee and co are training) is directly south of Edo, with the only connected land route is through the east. Thus it would make sense that reinforcement will come either from the south or east. If Mugai was in the west, with the north hopefully still holding out. Then, even if the reinforcement will come from the south, they could quickly move to protect the east.

For Yukimura, yea it's somewhat of a stretch for him to think a loss is possible. Perhaps he may think that with the north and west being slowed down, there is more of a chance for something to mess up. But really that's a pretty pessimistic view so I can't imagine how anyone, especially Yukimura could foresee any possibility of losing at that point in time.

He's right, the old Mugai woulda stood his ground. Simple but effective can't wait for the rest of our heroes to arrive!
