@Phelix It's true, though. Guns bring a great amount of equality to violence. In a fantasy world, the effect on the social order might be even larger because guns could potentially be deadlier than magic. If we ignore conflicts between countries, guns are more trouble than worth for governments, as far as law and order are concerned. Naturally we can't ignore affairs between countries, though. For bandits, guns would be a gift from Heaven.

Btw, I support private gun ownership, as long as something is done to prevent criminals or lunatics from acquiring them. But facts are facts.

@Kaarme The issue isn't the existence of violence, it's the hypocritcal focus or suggestion of it being needless violence. In a world that is more openly ruled by violence, these equalizer are the best tools that provides by the best insurance of peace. The difference is that you don't have to be a trained swordsman with years of experience to have a decent shot, the farmer who practices a few hours a week is deadly enough. Now everyone has to play by the rules because everyone has a decent chance of taking a bullet.

@Phelix Well, it's pretty difficult to judge, all in all, because guns and social development have progressed hand in hand. Guns are so efficient that they greatly aided the consolidation of power, allowing stronger governments and countries to be born. That, in turn, allowed the societies to developed a whole lot faster, advancing the civilization. It's only after that point that guns aren't useful for the government, aside from the obvious military needs.

Comparing Japan where pretty much no common criminal will have a gun or the USA where the police always needs to assume a criminal may be armed, it's quite easy to understand the pov of a Japanese author.

Why don’t they cut off the first guy’s leg so he won’t “come after us again” in the future If he doesn’t want to kill him or if it’s to gore he can just cut the achilles‘ heel.
