People's hair colours can also change quite wildly as they get older, from light blondes to very dark brunettes, which is something that happened to me and all my siblings (one has even gotten more of a reddish hue to his hair, something that wasn't there when he was child).

So it could have happened naturally... but more likely, he just dyed it for fashion reasons -- kids do that too. I knew plenty of kids with dyed hair before high school.
