I don't wanna comment in a way that might reveal too much that could be construed as later spoilers and whatnot, but I will say I think it works okay here because it's being compared to Garron's past. Garron looking back at what he said as something he's not proud of, and having learned from Draechen, is what makes the fact that he can't be around now that Garron's changed work in this chapter, IMO.
