Manhwa Review (Post was made when chapter 13 came out)

TL: DR: "Yeah I'd like uh...Mercenary Enrollment please, but uhm...keep the wholesome factor, make it more violent, take away the repetitious romance/harem trope, and uh....OH! Remove that repeating trope where the bad guys constantly go "WhAT!?! tHis kID IS StrOnG?!?!". Give it a chance though if nothing else, has the potential of being a 9.

Spoiler: Review Story Summary

Review Summary: Upon reading the description many people are obviously going to immediately think of "Mercenary Enrollment" and that it will share a plot similar to it.

In which the MC is a kid who is Korean that was raised in a place where they turn kids into super soldiers. A place where the MC just so happened to have also been the "best" that was produced from there. Yet, the MC manages to escape from the super soldier training camp, and is able to return to his home nation of Korea. Hiding there until he will eventually be discovered and hunted by the people who ran the Super Soldier training camp.

For those readers who immediately think that, you are correct, but that is where the similarities largely end between Juvenile Law and Mercenary Enrollment. In a number of ways the differences between the two stories are quite stark. The most major point of difference though is the motivation and characteristics between the MC's of the two stories.

In Mercenary Enrollment the MC managed to reclaim his memory and make it back home, freeing himself both physically and mentally from his past life. Now he only seeks to live a normal life with his family while he heals. As such his character is reserved in personality, he holds back while fighting, and is only prone to violence by choice.

In Juvenile Law, the MC never intentionally meant to escape his former life it just happened, nor did he ever reclaim his memories. By sheer accident though he came to join a "family" (really a kind old mother), and desires now to stay with said family, but at the same time is completely unable to. For he is still mentally trapped with the bindings of his former life. As such his personality is more outgoing, he doesn't hold back in a fight, and is prone to violence but none of it is truly by choice.

There is a number of other differences when comparing the two stories, but this summary is long enough as is. However, on one final note. The main writer of this story Byung Jan (Sgt.), seems to be quite experienced, having taken part in at least 8 manhwas with all of them at least being over an 8 in rating on Mangadex. So to any reader looking for a new series to start, I would recommend at least giving this one a shot. For while it might not become something amazing, it might at least be good enough to keep an eye on.

damn, a real shame honestly. i wish that stories like this would be a little more gritty and dark, especially given that it involves something as horrendously dark as child assassins. Not to mention, with that first scene of the oily fat mob boss basically fondling the male child assassin's inner thigh and the whole 'parent-child' thing, the implications about the business get even darker. Just gives it a very off-putting feeling when they try to maintain a mostly comedic tone the whole time. The action scenes are one of the only exceptions to that, though I'd be lying if I said some weren't ruined by horribly timed jokes/gags.

Basically: Keep the tone dark, stupid gags in the middle of supposedly serious moments ruin the story.

Also, it's a lot less enjoyable when no one of importance dies. I won't say more than that, spoilers and everything, but let's just say the author had the opportunity to completely change the entire tone of the story into something a little more appropriate for the plot but fumbled.

The Director and Sister Rachel clearly look like they were former Russian soldiers (if not mercenaries) before founding the Dead Mansion but I wonder why they wear clothing based on Roman Catholic/Western clergy rather than ze Orthodox Church.

Great manhwa/webtoon nonetheless. Bookmarked.
