That's part of it, but also once it's licensed then the scanlations are now competing with actual books that the actual mangaka gets a chunk of the actual money sales from.

Scanlators like iltrof who are skilled enough to work on pretty much anything they want to are working on something because, you know, they want to because they're fans of the manga. And as a fan you want the manga to succeed and the mangaka to get paid so they can keep making more of it and all that stuff, right? So stopping the TL is the most pro-mangaka option to take in that regard.

Now there's certainly a bit of a gray area there because scanlations can be a form of advertising that make people fans that want to buy the books, but there are also going to be a lot of people who will just freeload off the scans too and never get around to buying anything because they don't have to. So not everybody agrees stopping the scans is the most creator-friendly thing to do (and there's also the please-donate-to-our-Patreon scanners who just kinda don't give a shit in the mix too).
