So few words. So much to say.
The art is utterly superb, building on the architecture of the convent. Each page is a wall paneling, each gesture a conversation. The light itself is deftly manipulated to powerful effect, as if it has been passed through the stained glass of a cathedral.
The story, meanwhile, is a remarkably astute appraisal of the different circles which women inhabited in those centuries before the feminist revolution. Some lived restrained lives, others mundane ones, and yet others lived in cruelty and desperation, almost all longed for something they could not have. Yet, countless generations of women built worlds of joy and life in the spaces they were permitted to occupy.
