To be fair, I'd probably do what the "stupid MCs" do.
I normally consider myself a pragmatist, but I'm also kinda proud of being poor... to the extent that if anyone tried to give me a lot of money for any reason, I'd probably just straight up start a bonfire and burn it all just to spite them.
Then again, since the change to paper currency here in the UK, I'm not even sure it is flammable any more.
