The rumor was that Ogino was cheating on Ootomo and Ishigami was fighting on her behalf. Which is a watered down version of what happened. Grave enough to clear Ishigami's image but not enough to sully Ootomo's memories.
Very idealistic and dumb, not to mention the plan is ruined the second someone inquires further, but at least it got us out of that arc.
