I mean I agree that it's silly that he pulls the friendship card with the brainwashing but he literally gets called out on it (which I feel is kinda the point that he feels a comradery with people he manipulated). What I've liked about the story is that even though he is pissed at everything he acts like a believable person might react instead of him being a consistent one-dimensional revenge asshole.

The only genuine one are Eve and Guren, who doesn't know what you are really capable off.

And actually Guren is kinda weird case - she does act docile from time to time, but mostly she's arrogant towards Keyaru, and only complies with punishment (that needle he put inside her) and bribes (and lately it's been less of the former, and more of the latter - guess it's a sign of Keyaru softening up to her). She's even foremost worried that her life is linked to Keyaru's (unless you attribute it to tsundere shtick, lol).

Despite what he was thinking about, despite wanting to use them as pawns, he did help Eve. He did regrow Kureha's arm. He did made wolf girl level up and killed the slavers that were tormenting her village. They have all the reasons for developing a relationship with him.

I mean, Keyaru using them for his own goals is the case pretty much for everyone (or at least it was at first). But, yeah, i guess, there was also that thing about Setsuna's real name giving Keyaru control over her (although, she gave it to him willingly after he saved the village).
...That technically means she has even less free will of her own then other girls, doesn't it?

I've been real confused about the tone of this weird-ass manga for a long while now, it really seemed like the author was trying to pretend that the MC wasn't an insane brainwashing rapist obsessed with revenge, which I thought was the whole point? But now it's like...maybe some sort of redemption attempt?

Seems there's a lot of Reddit and such types in here conveniently forgetting this fact in order to once again pick up their toy swords in the name of women who'd likely never give them the time of day.

They also haven't been paying attention to the fact that the only member of his (literal--the word is not misused the way so many do) harem that he hasn't grown close enough to justify his speaking of fondness and companionship (they're not just "friends" at this point--he screws them) aside from the idiot fox is Freyja. All the others, he actually treats warmly to some degree--going beyond, in enough cases to notice, the extent of token affection one would expect to be shown for a brainwashed pawn.

What kills me is that I'm only reading this for Freyja--and this is a Tsukiyo Rui story. If you want to know what he thinks of pretty, busty girls (particularly those with gentle eyes), see what happened to the Spear Hero in chapter 51. His disdain is a recurring element in his works, manifesting in different ways.
