Fun fact: if I recall correctly, the kanji for "Gaki (brat)" can be literally interpreted as "(starving) (ghost)".

I wonder if the author was making a pun. I don't know the full etymology; could be famine after the war.

as someone who is a light eater, being able to eat heartily is a blessing~
I came to that conclusion after seeing animal rescues, and those that are able to 'eat' was such a large factor that improve there quality of life.
