I feel really bad for this boy, he went through such a hard life... I'm glad he gets a hopeful ending.
It's interesting that Makoto just tells him point blank that he can't sympathise with him for "failing" when it's clearly unreasonable to expect someone, especially a kid to catch an adult women who throws herself off a bridge out of the blue.
Makoto has been very fixated on the idea of helping people since he was introduced to the plot, not only that but on the idea of "being helpful". It seems like he might be projecting on Haruo here a bit, and that Makoto himself has done something he considers unforgivable? I have no clue what it might be though.

Hm, I think you're right, maybe the language I used was too harsh. Makoto isn't very expressive, but that certainly doesn't mean he's unfeeling... And "failure" might not be the right word. I'll change his statement a bit.

Funny little typo with "Showa" replacing the correct "Meiji" era dates in the sidebar notes on page 32. I'm not ready to be that old.
