Crucibal steel was far superior to any other billet production methods at the time. Only through complete liquification could you remove most of the impurities and get a tough, elastic metal which would flex rather than crack.
Bloomery steel which you would need to constantly hammer to remove slag from would be filled with impurities that could create weak points in the steel that could lead to crack propagation. It would also naturally have a higher carbon content which would make the metal harder and less flexible, which is not ideal for a sword.
