So, apparently this started as an award-winning one-shot. There must be some reason this was accepted for serialization given the horrific art, but honestly I can't see it.

The thing is, Ming eunuch Wei Zhongxian is infamous for his tyrannical control of the Ming imperial court between 1624 to 1627, and he's sometimes blamed for starting the rot that would lead to the fall of the Ming in 1644. However, in all honesty he wasn't ever that powerful or influential in history. When the Chongzhen Emperor came to power on October 2, 1627, it took him literally 6 days to strip Wei of his influence, or rather Wei was so cowed by the new emperor that he offered go give up everything immediately. Chongzhen actually refused Wei's surrender and let him stew for two whole months while just about everyone literate in China sent him all sorts of petitions begging him to punish Wei. On December 8 Chongzhen finally acted, publicly humiliating Wei by demanding that he read all the condemnations against him. Wei was functionally illiterate and could only struggle hopelessly as he tried to read aloud the few characters he knew until Chongzhen imperiously exploded and launched a long angry tirade against Wei. He exiled Wei on the spot and five days later Wei killed himself by hanging in an inn after he was told that his carriage was ordered to turn around and go back to Beijing.

So, you know... this chapter is 3 years long in-story. OK, so Wei should already be dead at the end of it, and MC still hasn't taken his exam.🤣 What kind of revenge is this? Even after passing the first exam he'd only end up as a shengyuan. He must then take three more exams over the course of the next three years (exams can only be taken once a year), going for juren, gongshi, then finally receive imperial sanction as jinshi or zhuangyuan (the top three scorers of the jinshi exam). So just to get to court he must spend 6 years in-story, meaning the story must start in 1621 for him to even make it to court to get revenge on Wei before his death. Wei did become chief eunuch in 1620, so I guess you can still squeeze him into the timeline. The only way to make the story work, though, is by making it about those three years of climbing the ranks.
