a bit less cliche outcome coulda been he failed but set up conditions for the thing to get submerged in a muddy sinkhole/quicksand. effectively disabling it for a long long time letting the spirits deal with it at their leisure.

Thought he was going to compress the water more and more until it would become so pressurized it slice the automoton right in half, but in retrospect it makes more sense they went with a cloud- why else would he try the 'mist' trick
